Jim Whippy on Sussex Angling - May

It’s been a real struggle with the boats fishing offshore finding the water very dirty and just a few pollack taking the lures. John Himpfen, skipper of Misty Blue is still walking tall after finishing top boat in the Brighton pollack festival. He did have a few of the England squad on board but finishing with Ray Barron in second place with a fish of 13lb 4ozs, Mike Smith in 4th and Matt Osbourne taking 5th, it was a good performance for John in his Evolution (the re-named Deep Blue). Deep Blue skipper Stave Bradshaw now has a brand new BW Cat that is a very impressive craft, with acres of space for the anglers and more speed for hitting the distant wrecks where he has caught lots of good pollack and has found some cod beginning to show. The boats working inshore for the plaice have had lots of fish, mostly on the small side but with a few bonus fish from 3lb to 4lbs.There have been a surprising number of decent sized tub gurnard and a few thornbacks caught along with the plaice. Usually these gurnard are barely sizeable but this year they are running to 3lbs.
